The two-month-long Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations finally came to an end yesterday, offering relief to the 15 million examinees who appeared in these tests this year. However, one exam under Madrassa Education Board is still pending. The education ministry has announced the new date for the last exam under the Madrassa Education Board, which was postponed on March 11, due to hartal. The exam will now be held on April 3.
“One of the Dakhil exams on higher mathematics, which was postponed on March 11, will now be held from 9am to 12pm on April 3,” senior information officer of education ministry, Subodh Chandra Dhali, said in a press release.
The SSC and its equivalent examinations across the country were scheduled during February 2 to March 10, but all the exams had to be rescheduled, due to hartal enforced by the BNP-led 20-Party Alliance.
Despite repeated appeals from the education ministry, the opposition continued with the hartal, which led to major disruptions in the SSC routine.
The education ministry could not start the exams on February 2, and the first rescheduled exam finally took place on Friday, February 6.
Initially, the ministry had thought of going ahead with the exams, as per schedule, by arranging security cover from law enforcers, to guard the examination centres and the examinees.
But, it later backtracked and decided to reschedule the exams, considering the security of the about 15 lakh examinees across the country.
Thus, the ministry could not hold a single examination as per schedule, rather, it was bound to hold all the exams only on weekly holidays—Fridays and Saturdays—due to hartal and blockade.
The repeated disruption of exams put unnecessary mental stress on the candidates, as they could not concentrate on any single subject, as exams were frequently being rescheduled, due to the hartal.
The guardians were also upset about seeing their wards in pitiable condition, since many examinees had difficulty in focusing on their studies, as they did not know which subjects to take up first, as the schedules kept changing.
After the two-month-long exam, the examinees said that they have finally got relief from
their tribulations. Abul Bashar, an examinee from Dhanmondi Govt Boys’ High School, said, “I will never forget this exam in my life. Finally, I got relieved from this.”
“It was not known when the exam would actually finish. Finally, it ended today. I'm feeling exhausted. Now, I will just take rest,” Zaman, another examinee, said.
Shahidul Islam, a parent, said, “We don’t want our children to face such problems in the future. Politicians should think why children have to be the victims of the political game.”
“It was difficult to look at the face of my child, during the exams. Finally, this has come to an end. It was a great burden for the students to attend the exams over such a long period,” Hasibur Rahman, another guardian, said.
Meanwhile, the practical examinations, including music and basic trade, will be held during March 29 and April 2. Education ministry sources said the result of the SSC and equivalent examinations will be published within two months.
All the education boards have already distributed the answer papers to the respective teachers, to evaluate them and to send the numbers to the boards.
Dr Srikanta Kumar Chanda, controller of examinations, board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka, told The Independent, “All exams under the general education board have been completed today. We have sent all the answer papers to the teachers, except today’s papers, which will also be distributed among the respective examiners.”
Asked about the publication of the result, he said, “As per the ministry’s decision, we hope to publish the result within two months.”
